(1494-1547) Francis I  became king of France at the age of twenty and reigned until 1547.  He resumed the wars against Italy and conquered Milan in 1515.  He was a life-long rival of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and waged wars against him from 1521 to 1544. A great patron of Renaissance art and scholarship, Francis brought Leonardo to France.
